ELASTIC SKINS

Push and pull. Bodies like honey. Inside and out mingled – too much or too little.

MONSTROUS BIRTH

Monstrous: Inhumanly or outrageously wrong…

Birth: The emergence of a baby or other young from the body of its mother; the start of life as a physically separate being…

SUCH VIOLENCE

Grasping each other in various ways as to affect the innermost nerves

Bare bodies as the only weapons

BLUEPRINTS FOR AN EMERGENT PERSONALITY

Blueprints for an Emergent Personality was created as a Vertigo Starts Residency (2018-2019) in collaboration with AMORE at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, a computational linguistics lab developing a form of AI which explores the phenomenon of childhood language acquisition, especially reference. The artistic aim of the residency was to visually explore the representation of non-human personalities using data from the AMORE model lab, and the surrounding Barcelonan streets. The result was an archive of a 140-page sketchbook, preparatory mixed-media works, and six large drawn-paintings on paper, which spoke to hypothetical emotional flashpoints of this particular learning process. Visual perplexities, confusions about identity, a fundamental dissociation from a human’s recognisable visual world weave a psychic terrain of AMORE’s potential non-human selfhood.

BROKEN HANDS

Broken: Having been broken, despairing, gaps in continuity, a rough surface….

Hands: End part of a person’s arm beyond the wrist, including the palm, fingers, and thumb; power to direct; active role in achieving or influencing; workmanship…

SUSANNA AFTER THE ELDERS

Waiting, in all its pathos and beauty. Inspired by Artemisia Gentileschi’s Susanna and the Elders. Created with wood found waiting on the streets of London.

WHEN DOORS ARE LEFT OPEN

An adult nursery rhyme: the story of a little girl and a boyish creature who enter a world of exoticism and confusion.

STRINGS and BIRDS

Years in Colorado: things tied down and with feathers. The more common, the more cunning, the more interesting.

‘Thought Lines’ project developed and exhibited as a Rocky Mountain Women’s Institute Fellow.

PANTOMIME

A little totemic theatricality that soaked through the skin – a forgetting of real and not. A dream world.
